The cage fight may or may not take place, but Mark Zuckerberg undoubtedly delivered the opening blow with the introduction of Thread.
Tech Giant Meta launched a look-alike app similar to Twitter. On July 6th, the app was made available for download on the Android Play Store and Apple Store across 100 countries. Threads gained 5 million sign-ups in the first four hours after going live.
Threads' web version was also made available for a brief period on July 5th but was taken down.
Threads allow users to log in with their Instagram accounts and follow the same accounts they follow on Instagram. Although the appearance might be similar to Twitter, the features on Threads are given different names. Tweets are called "threads," and retweets are called "reposts." Unlike Twitter, it also allows users to post longer posts with a character limit of up to 500.
According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, there should be a public conversation app with 1 billion users. He also stated that Twitter had the opportunity to be that app, but hopefully, we will be that app.
Thread also became the fastest-growing consumer app in history by gaining 30 million sign-ups in a single day
Threads received mixed reactions from users, with some liking it and others seeming uninterested in the launch of a Twitter-like messaging app. Time will decide whether it will be a serious threat to Elon Musk's Twitter or whether it will fade away like the previous apps.
